1. A Dinosaur Named Sue: The Find of the Century (Hello Reader!, Level 4) Grade 3/4
"Sue" is the largest and most complete T-Rex fossil ever found. Now children can read about her amazing story, from her discovery in the Badlands of South Dakota in 1990 to the exciting restoration work leading up to her Spring 2000 public debut. Dinosaurs are a hot topic right now...and A Dinosaur Named Sue: The Find of the Century really teaches young kids about the job of a paleontologist--in a positive light. SUE, the most complete T. rex fossil ever found, is an amazing discovery, both educationally AND on basis of interest, and children should definitely read all they can about this dinosaur. This book approaches SUE on the level of a 3rd grader, yet the language and subject matter are intelligient enough for a parent to find interesting--maybe even to learn from! I definitely did!
2. The Story of the Incredible Hulk (DK Readers, Level 4) [Paperback]
While I liked the lesson in the history of comic book characters, the best part of the book is the lessons in history and science. Teielbaum spends some time explaining the cold war, the fifties "duck and cover" that all American school children practiced on a regular basis, the power of nuclear weapons, and animals that are relevant to the cartoon characters. This is a lesson about the world that children will find very easy to absorb.
Children generally love comic books and if they are properly done, they can also learn science and history. This is a book that is properly done and it can be used as a science lesson/entertainment interlude in the later years of elementary school.
3. Soccer Sam (Step into Reading, Step 4)
I got this book along with several other step-4 books for my 6 year old son. He really enjoyed them especially since they seemed relevant to his life. He plays soccer and enjoyed reading the books and looking at the pictures. These books are well structured and provide kids with engaging stories at a level that pushes them to learn new words while also learning about social situations. I highly recommend these books to any beginning reader
4. Submarines (Step into Reading) [Paperback]
Young readers are in for the most exciting trip of their lives as they venture into a nuclear submarine! While touring the vessel from bow to stern, they learn about the history and mechanics of subs, their military and scientific uses, and the incredible discomfort--and danger--of life onboard. Illustrated with photographs, this is easy-to-read, high-interest nonfiction at its most compelling!
5. Choppers! (Step into Reading) [Paperback]
I purchased this book and the book on submarines for my grandson. He is into military stuff. He is a very good reader, but prefers playing video games, so I
thought this would interest him and give him something to read. He did enjoy reading and it had great pictures.
